Visiting IMCA-CAT

Beam Time

There are two ways to obtain beam time at the Advanced Photon Source (APS): either as a general user (a researcher not associated with a particular beamline) or as a member of a Collaborative Access Team (CAT). For more details, see the APS Policy on general user access and the Information section of IMCA's web site.

The Facility section of IMCA-CAT's web site also contains additional information regarding access to the IMCA-CAT facility and its available resources, including detailed information regarding mounting samples and data collection.

Once a user has recieved confirmation of their scheduled beam time and prior to coming to Argonne National Laboratory, please review the proper shipping methods for transporting non-hazardous samples to/from the faclity and the APS User policies and procedures.

Site Access

Access to Argonne National Laboratory is allowed only with an ID badge or a visitor pass. A visitor pass can be arranged by contacting the IMCA-CAT coordinator, Ann Bertling, via e-mail or at 630-252-0520. The visitors pass may be picked up at the Argonne Visitors Reception Center (VRC) located just outside the Main Guard House off Cass Avenue. Visitors are required to present photo ID when pick up their visitors pass. The VRC is open M-F, 6:30am - 5pm CST. A visitors pass may be left at the Guard House for pick up during times when the VRC is closed. Please note that a visitors pass alone does not permit a user unescorted access to the APS facility and if you are coming to perform hands-on work at the APS, a visitors pass is not sufficent to gain access to the facility, one must register as an APS User.

New Users

For detailed information and forms, please visit the APS New User page.

An APS User Registration Form must be submitted for each new user to the APS. Non-US citizens must have security clearance before access to the laboratory will be granted. If you are a citizen of, or your employer is located in, a sensitive country, you must register at lease 12 weeks in advance. Therefore, we encourage users to register with the APS as soon as possible. The APS User Guide provides detailed information on the requirements and process for gaining access to APS facilities. Once access to the facility is granted through the APS User Office, you will be scheduled to complete the necessary training:

All required training is administered by the APS User Office with the exception of Beamline-specific training (Sector Orientation), which is administered by the CAT staff. One MUST complete these required courses before any hands-on work can begin at the beamlines. The time needed for on-site orientation can be minimized by reading both the GERT study guide and the orientation study guide before coming to the facility. APS101 must be renewed every 5 years. GERT must be renewed ever 2 years.

Returning Users

Returning badged APS Users, who have received confirmation of their awarded beam time, will be allowed access to the facility by presenting their APS User badge to the guards at the entrance gate. Returning users MUST have CURRENT General Employee Radiation Training (GERT), APS Orientation (APS101), Cyber Security Training (ESH223), Electrical Safety Awareness (ESH377) and beamline-specific (Sector Orientation) training before any hands-on work can begin at the beamlines.

All required training is administered by the APS User Office with the exception of Beamline-specific training (Sector Orientation), which is administered by the CAT staff. Training on these required courses MUST be current before any hands-on work can begin at the beamlines. The time needed for on-site orientation can be minimized by reading both the GERT study guide and the orientation study guide before coming to the facility.

APS101 must be renewed every 5 years. GERT must be renewed ever 2 years. If you are unsure of your current training status, please contact the APS User Office to verify. To schedule training please contact the APS User Office directly. Training should be scheduled so that it is completed before the start of the users beam time. Sector Orientation will be administered by CAT staff prior to the start of a users scheduled beam time.
